2010 Projects

2010 Projects – APPLY NOW!

* Please apply by Sunday Feb. 7 — please follow instructions below.

Project I: Springworks

SpringWorks | www.SpringWorks.Org | Fundraising Strategy

* Please apply by February 7th at 11:59pm, by sending resume and brief letter of interest (on what the SpringWorks mission means to you) to ServiceCorpsSF[at]gmail.com.

Overview
As you are likely aware, there are a disproportionately low number of women and minorities in leading or supporting roles within venture investment sized start-ups. Historically, companies owned by women and minorities have received less than 5% of total venture capital investments over the past 40 years and minorities have only accounted for 3.7% of entrepreneurs in venture scale start-ups. We need to change these numbers.

The Opportunity:
The SpringWorks planning committee is interested in developing a fundraising strategy that will secure the ongoing financial health of Springworks.

Valuable Skills and Knowledge:

  • Fundraising experience (required)
  • Strong foundation in non-profit management (required)
  • Grant-writing experience (required)

Project Duration:
February – end of April (3 months), with potential for extension.

Time Requirement:
We won’t measure or require hours, but care more about professionalism and communication. If you need a number to gauge commitment, it is likely between 15-20 hours of work each month.

Meeting Information:
Weekly phone call, with date T.B.D. (flexible day and time)

National Program Expansion Plan

* Please apply by February 7th at 11:59pm, by sending resume and brief letter of interest to ServiceCorpsSF[at]gmail.com.

The CYES and GETS Programs:
Since 2000, Rising Sun Energy Center in Berkeley has run Community Youth Energy Services (CYES), a summer youth employment and community efficiency retrofit program in the Bay Area. CYES hires young people (15-22 years of age) and trains them to become Energy Specialists, serving their communities with a FREE ‘Green House Call’. They install free energy and water saving materials, provide personalized recommendations, and educate clients on further energy and water savings in homes. CYES provides services to all community members regardless of income, and the program provides youth with opportunities for training and meaningful employment that are often not available to them, including employability skills training, paid summer employment, and the foundation for a green career. Over the past several years, Rising Sun has received national and international attention for its innovative and results-oriented CYES program.

The Green Energy Training Services (GETS) program was developed by Rising Sun Energy Center to prepare adults who experience barriers to employment for entry-level jobs leading to careers in the Energy Efficiency and Building Performance industries. The GETS program uses classroom, lab and field settings to produce graduates who have the theoretical understanding, technical skills and industry-specific vocabulary required to assess, evaluate, record, and fix energy related problems in residential and small commercial buildings. Participants also work on improving their applied math and employability skills. Organizations interested in the 100-hour GETS curriculum and course may apply to license Rising Sun Energy Center’s GETS program materials.

The Opportunity:
Rising Sun is developing the Community Youth Energy Services (CYES) Affiliate Program to address the numerous requests to expand the CYES program nationally. The Green Energy Training Services (GETS) program will also be expanded. These programs will provide organizations in other states and countries with the opportunity to bring the CYES and GETS programs to their communities.

Project Objectives:
The goal of this Service Corps project is to develop strategic expansion plans for both programs, including the development of effective marketing campaigns.

The expansion plan will:

  • Determine the feasibility of licensing out program materials and curriculum to outside organizations while maintaining local program operations
  • Create a pricing structure or funding structure
  • Create a three year strategic plan for growth
  • Identify potential growth markets
  • Identify key strategic partnerships for expansion

Valuable Skills and Knowledge:

  • Business planning
  • Marketing
  • Community programs
  • Nonprofit Management

Project Duration:
February 22nd, 2010 – end of August (6 months)
* If you can only devote 3 – 5 months to this project, please indicate in your application that you would like to provide service for one to two stages of this project.

Meeting Information:
2 – 3 meetings/month, either in person or via conference call

Development of Corporate Philanthropy Product

* Please apply by February 7th at 11:59pm, by sending resume and brief letter of interest to ServiceCorpsSF[at]gmail.com.

Overview
The One Percent Foundation (OPF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a new generation of philanthropists by engaging young adults in sustained and thoughtful giving. OPF’s goal is to democratize philanthropy by developing a broad-based approach to next generation giving. OPF seeks to empower and train every young adult throughout their 20s and 30s so that they continue engaging as thoughtful philanthropists and community members for life.

OPF’s core program is the One Percent Giving Circle, through which young adults pool a portion of their giving and make grants to non-profit organizations working in the areas of Education, the Environment, Health, International Aid, and Poverty. Young adults who make the one percent commitment are responsible for nominating, assessing, and selecting the grant recipients.

Project IV: Business Council on Climate Change (BC3)

Business Council on Climate Change | www.BC3sfbay.org | Comprehensive Financing Strategy

* Please apply by February 7 at 11:59pm, by sending resume and brief cover letter (describing your interest in BC3 and relevant experience for the project) to info@BC3sfbay.org.

Overview

The Business Council on Climate Change (BC3) is cutting-edge partnership of over 100 San Francisco Bay Area businesses committed to taking aggressive climate action to reduce their green house gas emissions.  BC3’s members range in size and sector, from corporate titans like Gap Inc. to family-owned shops like Waldeck’s Office Supplies.  Operationally, BC3 organizes two monthly workshops for its members, monthly networking events, two biannual all-member meetings, and produces a quarterly newsletter with sustainability and climate-focused business updates, policy information, etc.

To date, BC3 funding has been obtained from voluntary member dues, with suggested dues based on a sliding scale; most funding has come from a small number of large company donations. For various reasons, we anticipate that this funding structure is not sustainable.

The Opportunity:

BC3 is looking to flatten, diversify, and strengthen its dues-based revenue structure.  We are looking for a comprehensive financing plan that includes membership dues, sponsorship opportunities, event fees, etc.  Our goals are to:

·        Ensure the financial sustainability of BC3, with a minimum annual budget goal of $100,000

·        Grow the membership, while maintaining a high level of value to existing members

·        Increase the recognition of the BC3 brand in the Bay Area

We expect the project will:

Review BC3’s current dues structure, budget, and membership.

Benchmark the funding strategy of organizations similar to BC3.

Identify potential funding sources and options for BC3; this should include, but is not limited to, revised dues, event fees, sponsorship opportunities, and grant funding.

Conclude with a recommended strategy to achieve the needed annual revenue; the strategy should include more than one of the funding sources identified above.

Valuable Skills and Knowledge:

Non-profit fundraising experience, ideally with membership-based organizations (required)

Experience working within private sector, ideally in corporate giving, business development, or CSR / sustainability (required)

Finance and budgeting experience (required)

Project Duration:

February 8, 2010 – March 15 (5 weeks)

Time Requirement:

We expect one weekly meeting, with collaborative work performed outside the meeting dates; not to exceed 5 hours / week.

Meeting Information:

Weekly meeting or phone call, with date TBD (flexible day and time).
