Joost and Michiel are cycling 30,000 kilometers, on bamboo bicycles, over 18 months from Alaska to Argentina to raise awareness for global water issues. All you have to do is 7 miles from the Ferry Building to Golden Gate Park.

Come join the fellas on the San Francisco portion of their journey and help bring attention to their cause, one that impacts every person on this planet.

We’ll be rolling out from the Ferry Building at… 10:30 am (sharp!) on Saturday October 9th and celebrating with a BBQ in Golden Gate Park, at the George Washington Grove picnic area, starting at 13:30 (that’s East of 25th Ave between Martin Luther King Jr Dr and Lincoln Way).

Joost and Michiel will regale us with tales from the road, live music will tickle our eardrums, free food (for riders!) will delight the senses, and B that we BYO’d will quench all our desires.

No good party would be complete without a costume, so sport something with a water theme – fish helmets, bathing suits, shark fins; the world is your oyster! Hey, that could be another one…we want to give the media something to talk about, so charge it!

Every community is subject to natural and human-made disasters of all types – earthquakes, floods, fires, and events that result in significant damage and mass casualties. Just as sustainable communities are prepared to have the smallest impact on their environment, they are also prepared to survive and recover from such events. This requires a level of preparedness and collaboration between individuals, families, businesses, and government emergency services.

In recognition of September’s National Disaster Preparedness Month, the Net Impact San Francisco Professional Chapter will explore the intersection of community resilience, disaster preparedness, and partnerships between government, businesses and nonprofit organizations to ensure the continued survivability and sustainability of our Bay Area community. In this panel session and facilitated discussion, we will discuss:
• Probable emergency scenarios and risk assessments for the Bay Area and the resulting damage and recovery estimates
• Infrastructure issues that concern disaster preparedness, community resilience, and sustainability-in-practice alike
• How community resilience and disaster preparedness can work in collaboration to promote a more sustainable Bay Area
• Available private sector – NGO and corporate – resources available to your community and workplace to contribute to a more resilient community

Celebrate San Francisco community sustainability during PARK(ing) Day! The Net Impact San Francisco Professional Chapter is creating a conceptual green space to connect and raise awareness of the need to create more urban open areas.

Since 2005 when Rebar started, PARK(ing) Day, it has been a one-day, global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention and to generate critical debate regarding how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!

Those interested in community resilience, sustainable architecture, and community disaster preparedness are invited to join us at our temporary public green space.

NEW Service Corps Project to support our local farmers!

The Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association (they run many of the farmers markets in the Bay Area) is launching an innovative project and we need your help!
 
This new project would enable small farmers to create new value-added products (jams, pickles, dried fruit, etc) in partnership with another local nonprofit’s commercial kitchen and culinary training program. We’re excited about this project because it will 1) help local farmers, 2) reduce the amount of fresh produce that goes to waste, 3) provides training and income to low-income SF residents who are hired in the kitchen.
 
We are recruiting a team of pro-bono consultants to create a business plan for this project.
 
Service Corps projects are part-time and usually requires 15 to 20 hours per month. Learn more on here.

Are you interested in a meaningful conversation  and a great dinner? We are looking for Net Impact  Members to host dinners of 6-8 people who are  passionate about a particular a sustainability topic.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A HOST:

  • Pick a topic you are interested in.
    Ex: Sustainable Agriculture, Fair Trade, Water Scarcity, Healthcare, Social Entrepreneurship, Supplier Sourcing, etc.
  • Book a reservation at a restaurant for 8 people on a date of your choosing. Please ask ahead of time if separate checks are available for a party of 6-8 to make payment easy.
  • Optional: Invite an esteemed member of the sustainability community who is an expert in your desired topic.
  • Send confirmation and RSVP information to registered attendees
  • Update reservation if less than 8 people RSVP.

Will you accept the challenge?

Our Net Impact SF has been challenged by The HUB SF. The decision has been made to accept this challenge. The title of the competition is THE GOOD ACTION PLAYOFF.

Question: Are you sad that the World Cup is over?

We need all the doers on Team Net Impact to help us win The Good-Action Playoff against Team HUB. The Good-Action Playoff is a friendly competition to see who collectively does more good in their daily lives over the next 4 weeks. The more good deeds you check into the website (www.blitzbazaar.com), the more prizes you get to give away (i.e. iTunes or Kiva gift cards) and the more likely Net Impact takes home the trophy. Hosted on Blitz Bazaar’s new action platform, the Playoff will be launched at the Happy Hour, so don’t miss out! The contest continues online for exactly four weeks until Sunday, August 22, at which point the winning team will be announced.

CONTEXT (a.k.a) The Skinny: Simply put, The GOOD ACTION PLAYOFF is a friendly competition between the members of the Hub Bay Area & Net Impact SF to see which network of change-makers collectively does more good in their daily lives over the next month.

Goal #2: To build team camaraderie such that members get to know each other better.

A Taste of Utopia: Hiking, Swimming & Picnicking at Bass Lake!

If you’ve never been to Bass Lake, you’ve got to come. If you’ve already been, I’m sure you signing up right now. Come on out and join us for a potluck picnic, short hike and swim fest at Bass Lake. We’ll meet at 10am at the Safeway at 2020 Market Street, where we can rideshare and carpool as needed. We will then drive to Bolinas (~45 min away), where the trail head to Bass Lake is located. Everyone should bring shoes for a short, gentle 35-45 min hike to the lake and back, some picnic fare to share, booze as desired, swimming suits, a blanket to sit on and/or towel and sunscreen. Floaties, swimmies, noodles, goggles, pina coladas and snorkels are optional but recommended.

Come join us for the Net Impact Summer Happy Hour at Hub SoMa’s beautiful new space.  This is a great chance to meet and talk with like-minded folks in the Bay Area from both Net Impact and the HUB.

There will be free samples from the sustainable winery Beaver Creek, organic beer from MateVeza and non-alchohlic beverages from Hansens and Kahe’Juice.  Don’t forget dessert with chocolates samples provided by Jade Chocolates.

Grilled cheeses will be served fresh off the press by Feel Good World, a nonprofit that aims to end world hunger one grilled cheese at a time. Extra proceeds from the cover charge go to the Feel Good World cause.
